Your Keeper Sideboards

Beyond Dominia: The Type One Magic Mill: Your Keeper Sideboards

-->
By Steve O'Connell (Zherbus) on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 11:31 am:

Like the old list that was a request for everyone to make a listing of thier keeper deck, I am looking for a list of what people are running in the SB of their keepers. I'd like a small explanation of the choices according to metagame, etc as well.

Here is mine, I'll include my deck as well.

Blue things that sit in your hand (10)
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
1 Misdirection
1 Time Walk

2 Guys, a girl...(3)
2 Morphling
1 Gorilla Shaman

Card Drawing (4)
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Stroke of Genius
1 Braingeyser

Tutors (4)
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll

Critter Control (5)
1 The Abyss
1 Swords to Plowshares
1 Diabolic Edict
1 Balance
1 Fire/Ice

Bullets (6)
1 Sylvan Learning Center
1 Zuran Orb
1 Dismantling Blow
1 Regrowth
1 Mind Twist
1 Yawgmoths Will

Mana (28)
7 SoLoMoxen
1 Library of Alexandria
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Strip Mine
1 Undiscovered Paradise
3 Wasteland
3 Tundra
3 Volcanic Island
4 Underground Sea
4 City of Brass

Sideboard:
3 REB
2 BEB
2 COP:Red
1 COP: Black
2 Dwarven Miner
1 Shaman
1 Compost
1 Timetwister
1 Aura Fracture
1 Moat

My meta game is generally aggro, but theres always control thrown in. rOSE, Mono blue and decks people think are keeper make appearances. Theres many forms of mono black, from suicide to knives, to nether void. Sligh is there, lots of it. If there wasnt such a large sligh element I'd run the twister main deck.

The fracture has worked wonders for me against non basic hosers, and the shamans come in against alot more decks than I would have thought since just about everyone uses moxen.

Compost is god. If I get it out that is.

By Hero t Mannetje, the Dutch Pyromaniac (Hero) on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 02:26 pm:

My sideboard, for a metagame that's half control/oath and half aggro/junk decks

2 COP:Red, shouldn't be too hard
2 Dwarven Miners, nonbasic land hate is good here, even in keeper
4 REB, Mono-U makes quite an appearance
2 StP, aggro again, and pretty good vs ophidian, if I have place to side them in
1 Moat, aggro
2 Seal of Cleansing, BtB sucks
1 Tormod's Crypt, we even see pandeburst/enchantress here from time to time1 Misdirection, great vs mono black and anything blue

Heh heh, wouldn't that be four guys and a girl?

I'll post the SB for my Keeper/Oath when I get home.

By Robb on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 06:02 pm:

Well, I don't play red in my keeper but here goes.

2 COP Red (sligh)
3 Duress (control)
1 Teferi's Response (mono black/land d/etc)
1 Black Vise (control/ask Matt D how he liked it)
1 Perish (stompy)
1 Sanctimnoy (sligh/I'll explain)
1 Caltrops (sligh and stompy/I'll explain)
1 Powder Keg (stompy/sligh/black)
1 Aura Fracture (mono blue)
1 Ensnaring Bridge (mono black)
1 Enlightened Tutor (depends)
1 Masticore or 1 Duress (depends on the day and who I see playing)

The main thing about my sideboard is that it is very fluid and flexible. There are certain staples that are always there such as 3 duress, perish, keg, 2 Cop Red, Aura Fracture and Tef response) The other 6 slots change depending on any number of things.

Ensnaring Bridge: Has taken the place of moat. Ensnaring bridge is really only good against a discard heavy black deck and seems to be a pretty effective life saver.
Caltrops: Also taking the place of moat but against sligh, and to a lesser degree, stompy. VS sligh it shuts down all of there attacjers for 3 colorless mana and is only vulnerable to a mox monkey and seven mana. By that time you should be in control. I'm trying it out as it looks good on paper. Against stompy it keeps many of their creatures from attacking such as river boa, wild dogs, lyrists and quirion rangers. It is not a complete hoser but certainly buys time if you want to side it in.
Sanctimony: OK, I admit that I have trouble with good sligh decks for some reason. This card is not perfect and does not help if there are already creatures out. What I have experienced before is having a cop red out and sligh dropping miners and monkeys and killing all my land. It is spooky how often that has happened. Kaplan raped me so hard a few weeks ago (4-0) that I still can't sit down. Anyway, sanctimony makes scroll useless and slows the burn down enough to buy you a few extra turns at least. Agaoin, it is in the experimental stages and seems good so far.

Black Vise: What is the goal in the control mirror? Card advantage! If you get the vise out your opponent will have to stay below 5 cards or die a slow death. It worked for me last week and it also keeps the pther player from going nuts with sylvan. It is now occupying my monthly keeper-mirror slot.

Oue metagame (NG New York)consists of strong keepr decks and an increasingly effective assortment of sligh, mono black and misc aggro decks.

By Valdner (Valdner) on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 06:27 pm:

Here is my sideboard as promised:

4 Duress
1 Circle of Protection: Black
1 Circle of Protection: Red
1 Spirit of the Night
1 Swords to Plowshaes
1 Aura Fracture
1 Moat
1 Oath of Druids
1 Compost
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Powder Keg

I play in a pretty much all aggro field which is why I use Oath over Keeper. Spirit goes in versus Keeper and BBS, and the rest are pretty self-explanatory.

By Big Blue on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 02:26 pm:

SB (in brackets the number of main deck copies):

3 REB (0 MD)
1 Mox Monkey (1 MD)
1 Dwarven Miner (1 MD)
1 Pyroclasm (0 MD)
2 Powder Keg (0 MD)
2 Duress (0 MD)
1 Seal of Cleansing (0 MD)
1 COP: Red (0 MD)
1 Psi-Blast (0 MD)
1 Control Magic (0 MD)
1 BEB (0 MD)

metagame:

mixed: Keeper, Forbiddian, mono-B (Pox, NetherVoid, Sui), Sligh, Combo (Academy, Turboland, PandeBurst, ...), Random stuff (Parfait, Rec/Sur, Freak Show, Zoo, ...)

non-standard MD choices:

1 Mox Monkey, 1 Dwarven Miner (!), 1 Timetwister (!), 1 Tundra (!), 4 Vulcanic (!!), 4 Waste, 1 Academy, 0 Braingeysir, 1 Sylvan with 0 Tropicals (but 1 UP!), 0 Regrowth, 0 StoP, and only 60 cards rather than 61...

Is this a statistical evaluation for the sake of world-wide bureaucracy? :)

By Steve O'Connell (Zherbus) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 06:41 am:

No not statistical, more for my own curiosity and for a peek in to the tech of players in different meta games.

Robb, I like some of your sideboard choices. I really like the idea of caltrops.

Most people run duress against control, whenever I do, I wish it was a miner...then again I dont see any GOOD mono-blue builds around here.

By Spevack (Spevack) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 05:22 pm:

Given a fairly standard Keeper deck, when sideboarding for the mirror, I typically bring in 2 Miners, and take out Abyss and StP. What else should be brought in/out of board for the mirror match?

REB seems like it could be good, but I would not be sure what else to cut from the MD, as it seems that StP and Abyss are the only dead cards in the mirror.

Any advice is appreciated

By Jacob Orlove (Orlove) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 06:57 pm:

Generally, mystical and vampiric tutor are fairly useless in the mirror, as they are unneded card disadvantage.

By Milton (Milton) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 07:40 pm:

Sideboard
2 Bloodmoon
4 Red Elemental Blasts
1 Abyss
1 Disenchant
2 COP Red
1 COP Black
1 Masticore
1 Disrupting Scepter
1 Gorilla Shaman

By Jacob Orlove (Orlove) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 07:53 pm:

Right now (assuming judgement works the way it should) my sideboard will look like:
3 ReB
2 StP
1 Aura Fracture
1 Seal of Cleansing/Viashino Heretic
1 Ensnaring Bridge
2 CoP Red
1 Moat
1 Morphling
1 Shaman
1 Miner
1 Masticore

By Gizzard (Gizzard) on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 12:28 am:

>Heh heh, wouldn't that be four guys and a girl?

I always thought the Morphing picture was 2 girls. Doppelganger clearly was 2 girls; wasnt the R&D theory that the Morphling would be the new Doppleganger? Mmmm, yes.

Anyway, then it would be 4 Girls and a lumpy, red Monkey.

My sideboard is a giant pile of junk. Actually, its a small pile of junk, I only have 10 cards in it right now. But CoP:Red, 2xPowder Keg, Masticore, 2xReB, 2xStP, Vampiric and Tormods Crypt. The last two are just taking a breather on the bench while I try Teferi's Response and Merchant Scroll out in the maindeck. Aura Fracture should definitely be in and I was always a fan of the Vise. Maybe some Miners, a Monkey and some extra Disenchants would round it out.

Excuse me, lowly Stompy player, but this is an elite Keeper only thread.

Kidding... couldn't resist. :)

By Dozer (Dozer) on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 04:43 am:

4 Red Elemental Blast
1 Dwarven Miner
1 Gorilla Shaman
1 Hurkyl’s Recall
1 Seal of Cleansing
1 Aura Fracture
1 Circle of Protection: Red
1 Spiritual Focus
1 Teferi’s Response
1 Moat
1 Swords to Plowshares
1 Tormod’s Crypt

This is my current pre-Judgement sideboard. When I've included one (or two?) green Wishes, I'd like the SB to feature all of Miner, Shaman, Rootwater Thief, Morphling and Masticore, and maybe even Wall of Razors. But I am yet to see how I can fit that all in...

My decklist looks almost the same as Fbi's, but with Powder Keg instead of Respinse (and Scrying Glass instead of Time Walk because I don't own a Walk).

Dozer

By Dozer (Dozer) on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 05:23 am:

Oh yeah, the metagame explanations: Shaman is SB because IRL I don't encounter many P9 players. Hurkyl's and Seal are mainly there for Funker/ Stacker 2. Teferi's Response is better than Sacred Ground because it draws me two cards and also destroys Miner (or Shamans aimed for my Factory!). It just does more than Sacred Ground, and it is a blue instant.
Spiritual Focus over Compost: Focus keeps Hyppies at bay and is a real pain in the ass for Pox players. It still is useful midgame, and Compost is just less protective. Coming early, Focus does more for you than Compost. Midgame, Compost is a little better, lategame both are of equal utility. So, I prefer Spiritual Focus. Plus, it's white, which is way easier to support early in the game than green Compost.

Dozer

P.S.: Oh, and my Keeper main deck also has a Mishra's Factory, unlike Fbi's.

By TSPRT (Tsprt) on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 05:46 am:

did anyone try:

Carpet of Flowers ?
Enchantment
cc:G
exp:US-U
At the beginning of your pre-combat main phase, you may add up to X mana of any one color to your mana pool, where X is the number of islands target opponent controls.

against BtB in Mono-U? I think it is made for this purpose.

By The Usual Stompist (Fbi) on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 11:03 am:

I only play stompy irl :)

does it show?

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 11:18 am:

No. :P

By Carl (Carl) on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 11:52 pm:

Dozer, you can't use Shaman to kill a factory:
Text (AL+errata): 1/1. ; {X}{X}{1}: Destroy target noncreature artifact with converted mana cost {X}.

I've tried Spiritual Focus and didn't like it. I've used Merchant Scroll instead (fetch Ancestral/Stroke or Mystical Tutor).

By Dozer (Dozer) on Sunday, April 14, 2002 - 10:52 am:

Quote:

Dozer, you can't use Shaman to kill a factory:

Damn, you're right. Anyway, I stick to Response - it draws cards and screws my opponents plans. And kills Miner.

I have Merchant Scroll maindeck already, and I like to have something against discard apart from just drawing more cards. And what else is there short of a Brainstorm?

Dozer

By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Sunday, April 14, 2002 - 09:51 pm:

Alright I have nothing to say about keeper SB's (I don't play keeper...). But I did want to point out that Morphling is a Girl, yes that's right Morphling is a WOMAN :) Don't believe me? Then ask rk yourself ;-P

By Steve O'Connell, King of Metaphors (Zherbus) on Monday, April 15, 2002 - 10:20 am:

Morphling is really an it, but whatever.

With the new wishes, I'm SURE I am adding the green one if not in addition to the red one.

I was thinking that a viashino heretic could be really good in the SB. Shaman will still eat moxen, but I think it makes its matchup against academy, funker, *cough*Mask*cough*, and stacker 2 variants.

By Steve O'Connell, King of Metaphors (Zherbus) on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 - 06:41 pm:

Goddammit. Im gonna up my Keeper thread too.

Cooberp has me convinced that the wishes are good right now, so once the time comes, ill play with it.

By Glenchuy (Glenchuy) on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 10:14 am:

my sideboard

4-ReB
3-dwarven miners
1-gorilla shaman
1-black vise
1-mana short
1-COP:red
1-ivory mask
1-Fire/Ice
1-Diabolic Edict
1-usually reserved for what i feel using that day.

my metagame is mainly aggro- sligh, burn, stompy, UWR aggro-control.

i already maindecked moat+abyss so i pretty much have no prob against aggro when either shows, plus i have 1 swords, 1 fire maindecked.
