"Do you feel that the Rath Saga is a good story, and do you feel they should take some more time to make decent cards rather than a complex storyline?"
OK I apoligize for my tardiness on this well the past 2 months installment's I was out of town but I now am back and the Questions are ready to fly again. This topic caused quite a stir from everybody. I had quite explict arguements for both sides of this debate. It seems this question is as contraversial as the evil, should WotC lengthen the intervals of the sets."
Some people were quite avid about the greatness of the story: "I think that the store line is very importent. It gives you something else in magic, it gives it more of a feel to the game, rather then some random cards." -(V)etallica "I think the storyline and the power of the cards are both equally wonderful. Tempest was a really nice set with great cards, both playablility and appearance-wise." -Ray Myers "I think the story is almost as important as the cards themselves. If you have a cool background story, you have a good basis for making cards. I think the Rath Cycle is awesome not just because of the cards, but where the cards come from. It also makes more sense if the cards follow a story instead of just being put together."-Dervish(becoming a regular) Some people hated the story more than life itself: "Well, the plot is a hack if you ask me, I could come up with more interesting plot twists with one arm tied behind my back. If the innovation spent on coming up with an 'original' (BIIIG stress on the quotes ;) story was instead put towards innovative card design, I think the cycle would be a lot firmer from a players' point of view. Oh, and Cursed Scroll should have never made it through playtesting... apparently they were so busy with their plotting for the next few years that they only tested the Scroll's viability in control decks..." -Gandalf "Think that if wizards wants to make a storyline, they should write a book-not one the size of a rulebook, but a real novel, they are already sponsoring dozens of authors to write about magic-related storylines, why not Rath? it would leave the rest of the company more time to make good cards." -Lord Strahd "Gerrard must die!!!!! what was wrong with the storyline for fallen empires? (by the way that set didn't suck as much as everyone says). y do those #$%@!&* weatherlight characters have to appear on every card. speaking of cards 5edition sucks SO MUCH ASS! and to think i thought 4th sucked when it came out. anyway, i digress, the weatherlight story is SOOO boring. y is wizards so hell-bent on ruining this game? the art sucks now (peruse through some legends cards if u disagree and then tell me elvish fury looks cooler than jovial evil) the cards suck now (since when are bolt and swords broken) green sucks now (actually nevermind, green has always sucked) and the storyline sucks (gerrard is a dirty %^$!@+%)." -mithrand69 "I think that the whole rath thingy is pathetic. Why cant we have any decent cards coming out like Royal Assassin. What is the deal with these damn slivers!? They are definately EVIL. I HATE SLIVERS!!!!!!" -twiddle "I don't really care about stories that much. I read the Arabian Nights, and it's cool that the cards in the set go along with the story. Sinbad is a real character, and the Diamond Valley was his destination. But the Rath Saga? ... Who's Hannah?" -Robert Serig "I have never been fond of any storyline in any CCG except for the L5R storyline. I don't see any reason for writing stories in cardboard few people would even read. It doesn't matter to me what's the reason behind the card cataclysm, I just wanna cast it let the other guy feel the heat. I miss the days when flavor texts were quoted from the Bible, the Koran, Shakespeare, and my favorite, Samuel Coleridge. Now they got some half baked R&D geek quoting Sqee or any other wretched sap!" -Unglued Gamer "The story is not really bad but in no way does it match the niveau of the game, of its concept, of its mechanics which I think it should. Instead of helping the game and its environment 'grow up' the editors created a story that would rather fit to MONOPOLY or whatever! I've heard people complain about being embarrassed to be seen playing an anonymous-comic-style-fantasy-card-game in public... I wish: -WotC would stop aiming at just the under-18-customers and stick that story-stuff right...well..put it into those MTG-Books, Comics, whatever....! -get back to a rather revised-/thedark-like style that leaves plenty of room for the individual's imaginations (which-I hope u agree-is the best source for 'background' and atmosphere) -yes, I wish they would take some more time to make some decent cards as I think the more frequently editions are thrown on the market the less balanced the (meta)game becomes and the more I feel like a freakish exploited idiot ...maybe I should quit all this MAGIC-crap and spend my money on drugs and whores." -Seb, DCI-ranking 1804(strd) People gave me solicitations (or so it seems): "When you compare the Rath story to the story of the Lengends of the Five Rings story, you see that the Rath story is very weak. It is like He goes here and does this and then he did this. Magic is not a story based game. By trying to force a charater in there does the game wrong. If you want to have a story then it should (in my opinion) be based on the Vangard cards. There should be Tournements were the winner and his or her vangard card gets the prize. Changing the story line with every tournement. If you feel this is a good idea then WotC should also make a "good" and "bad" side. When the good side wins the story line goes one way when the bad side wins the story goes another. This is basicly what l5r is all abot. And the story is awsome." -ADAM And it looks like I might even have a Fan!: "Boy, at least someone thinks like me! The rath story is something a Spider Monkey could think of. It's like at the card thinks department, or what ever you call it, they say to themselves, "boy we really $&^#* up when we made cards like Black Lotus and the Moxes and Juzam Djin. I got an idea! Let's make really sucky cards like Beast Walkers and Goblin Rock Sled. Now people will buy packs and say, 'Wait a minute, these cards suck royal! Why the hell am I bying packs?' and they'll keep buying packs untill they get a good card. But wait, there is no good cards!" And they Laugh and laugh all the way to the bank. That's the thing. Why don't they print good cards. Who the hell cares if Gerrard can save Sisay, the Queer-Ass. I wanna know if Gerrard can wear Moxes and Bring along Serindib Efreets with him. The people at WotC need to get a friggen hint and start making some good cards and stop with the Skyshroud Condors and City of Traitors! Gimmie a $^@*%@& break." -Cosmo Basically representing the majority of players: "I would rather let Wizards fire the writers and use the extra money to fill their greedy pockets and either: 1) Lower the prices or 2) Spread out the release dates of the expansions for god's sake! (or both) I get excited about a new expanision because of new cards, not because I can't wait to see if Gerrard defeats the evil Volrath, or if Sisay sleeps with Karn's wife...it's not a damn soap!" -Scott Thanx for your opinions and be sure to keep the responces coming.
