March Results for the Question of the Month
Thanks everyone for the overwhelming response for last month's Question of the Month. We received exactly 302 replies to the question :
WotC recently announced a new plot line to tie in all the expansions; they are creating this ship, called Weatherlight, which travels between the different planes of Dominaria. Predict how this Weatherlight saga will do... will it enhance the game, make it totally corny, or ??? Why do you think so??
The responses varied widely... some people, such as Mark Cross, who thought that :
- First of all, let me mention that I'm positive (though WOTC will never admit it), that Weatherlight was created as a response to the growing popularity of Legend of the 5 Rings. L5R made its name via the use of a continuing storyline, and as each expansion came out, the story would continue in the cards themselves (and not some separate story in a magazine). It was this ingenious, creative stroke that made me look at L5R in the first place. And though L5R is not Magic (Magic is still no. 1 with me), it may however be the best multi-player game in the market (certainly better than Magic since 4 player Magic sucks).
This minor point aside, Weatherlight will introduce more creatures with special abilities. Since Mirage, it seems that utility is the main consideration when creating new cards and the idea of faraway lands just sets up well for multi-color creatures with strange powers. I wasn't too impressed with Visions, I don't think that Weatherlight will do any better. Alliances and Mirage still rank at the top of my list for best sets.
To people who thought that Weatherlight would be "corny", such as Chris B. :
-
I think the story is pretty corny, a ship that travels around??? Sound like some kinda care bear crap or something, I dont know what it will do to the game but it sures sounds like crap to me...

- I think this "Weatherlight" is kind of corny. I mean a ship?!?!
The expansions are already explain with different planes. I think
this is just another marketing ploy.
Some people simply thought that WotC was overdoing it with the expansions, such as Kevin Hess...
- Actually, it's a neat idea, but it'd be better if the expansions were more evenly spaced out. WoTC shouldn't release another expansion for.. well, probably not until the end of this year, at least. I'll be perfectly happy to see the Weatherlight, oh, say, around this Christmas. :)

- It will hurt the current environment of Type II.
It seams that WotC is getting over zelous in
making expansion to maintain their current high level
of sales. But this over "expansion" will and could
hurt the real reason that people buy MtG cards and
that is to play, either friendly or with friends!!!
What this does is eliminate the best effective use
of either the more potent cards and increase the
abuse of the Secondary market(meanig that the price
of those few singles that average person needs to
either complete a set or play a new deck, will sky
rocket since only the Stores will be buying boxes
to sell the single) I could understand WotC
releasing every 9-12 months, but please don't
misunderstand me. I just fear another expansion
like Homelands. And I love opening fresh boosters
to find new cards to either incorporate in to
my present deck or to sit down and make a new
based on special quality from the new card.
If given the choose of my cards being de-valued
due to overprinting (Longer print runs over time)
and a new release every 3-5 months.... I'd take
overprinting. And if WotC continues with this curent
trend of rotating cards every few months I will have to
either sell my cards or have a bon fire at the next
Pro-Tour stop using my cards as the fuel to the fire.
I know many were upset with the lose of Ice Age and Fallen
Empires, but those two were due. But I hear first WeatherLight
and before Christmas another Stand-Alone is due for relase...
please...someone call Susan Powers to "Stop the
Insanity" before everyone gets turn-off.
But, a good percentage of the people thought that Weatherlight is a good idea, such as Jon Palmer...
- I think that Weatherlight will help to show
us a great many new people, items, and
creatures that have never been seen before.
It should help to maybe show more of
Phyrexia, one of the other planes previously
talked about in Magic. Maybe there'll be
new and better planes or even more corrupted
ones but we shall never now untill it comes
out.

- Price Rials...
- I don't think it will be very corny at all.
Wizards always seems to do a good job with
their story line's and also we've already
seen some of the Weatherlight in Mirage and
Visions.(teferi's Drake-We threw dried fruit
to hte drakes that rode the air, streaming
along the Weatherlight's side as we sailed
amidst the clouds.-Sisay Cpt. of the Weathlight.)
It will also give us a chance to learn more
about the diffrent areas of Dominia.

- It makes sense to have an airship which can
travel between the planes when planeswalkers
also have the exact ability. In fact, it
seems more logical to see a ship carry its
passengers to new worlds, rather than seeing
a person hop from plane to plane by sheer
willpower.
I think that tying all the worlds
together in this manner is a great move by
WoTC for the following reasons:
The worlds will seem "smaller" and more
connected in the role-playing sense.
Planeswalkers summon creatures from more
than one plane during the same duel already,
so creatures have been interacting against
their wills for a quite a while. The
Weatherlight will finally bring creatures
together in more of a civil fashion more or
less. This new expansion will provide WoTC
with the opportunity to create cards based
in the worlds of previous expansions w/o
having to re-release the expansion. For
example, WoTC might have thought up some
great card ideas for Antiquities or Arabian
Nights, but it's too late to include these
additions to an expansion that was already
released. "Weatherlight" will provide an
opportunity to see new cards from old
worlds.
