by Brad Smits Goblinometry: The Functions of Goblins For this month, I've decided to step away from T2, and take a quick look at a deck for its' big brother T1.5. One of the funniest deck types there are to make are those based on a single creature type or special ability. Among all of these, the one that has stood the test of time over and over, and continually gets stronger, is the classic Goblin deck. Now, everyone has to admit that singlely, Goblins more or less suck, with a few rare exceptions, such as the Goblins of the Flarg. But, in swarms, Goblins pack a very huge wallop. And that is the focus of this deck: Getting the Goblins as huge as possible. This is done in several different ways. All four of these are creature combinations. First is the basic manuver with the Goblins Kings. More Kings in play = larger goblins ( X*Goblin King = Goblins +X/+X ). One of the basic equations of Goblinometry. Second is the Goblin Soothsayer. With him, you can sacrifice any goblin to give all red creatures in play +1/+1 ( Goblins -1 = Goblins +1/+1 ). Even if your opponent is using red, you should be able to swarm him with creatures. Third, and possibly the most powerful power boost for the goblins is Márton Stromgald ( Márton = Goblins +Goblins/+Goblins ). All creatures need a leader, and Márton will lead the Goblins to victory as long as he is accompanied by a large swarm of Goblins. Finally, with Golbin Recruiter, you can put as many Goblins as you want on the top of your library. While this is fine and dandy, and you can summon huge swarms of goblins of the next several turns, it does you nothing in the here and now. This is where Song of Blood comes in. It looks simple enough: discard the top 4 cards of your library, and for each creature discarded this way, all attacking creatures get +1/+0 this turn ( Goblin Recruiter + X*Song of Blood = Goblins +4X/+0 ). With Goblin Recruiter, you KNOW that all the top cards of your library will be creatures. With the awesome bonus this gives each creature, it will make your swarm unstoppable. Unfortunately, Goblins, too, need defense. Wait a sec.... Goblins.. defense? Nah, forget it, lets just frag whatever tries to get in your goblins' way. Goblin Grenade is one of the best cards to come out of Fallen Empires, and with the ability to smash your opponent for 5 with R and one goblin, I think you'll agree ( Grenade + Goblins = 5 damage ). Also, every spell in this deck except for two is red. And almost all of them are extremely easy to cast. So Lightning Cloud makes a perfect addition to this deck, allowing you to inflict damage whenever you cast one of your harmless (!) goblins. As always with something like this, the more the merrier ( X*Lightning Cloud + Red Spell = X damage )! Unfortunately, in order to get your creatures out, you need land. And, once you have all the land you need, what are you supposed to do with it? Well, you could put it down and use it to create more goblins in your Warrens, or you could use Teferi's Puzzle Box and let you entire hand refresh it self every turn. This has the added advantage of forcing your opponent to cast spells as quick as possible and denies him the ability to plan moves turns ahead.
Well, have fun, annihlate people, and get back to me with your results using this deck (or a derivative deck that fits your play area better). As always, this foray into quirky deck designs has been brought to you by: Brad Smits d***r@n***m.com PS: My apologies to anyone who tried to reach me this month. The change of a mail server, the recent failings of my hard drive, and the total lack of a motherboard for two weeks has resulted with me not being able to reply to any messages you might have sent me.
