Is Magic Losing Its Fun?

I've been playing Magic for a while now, and recently I broke off from the people I used to play with because of certain...differences (i.e. I wasn't really well- liked around there)...but I do play a few games with them now and then. The thing I want to point out is that Magic is starting to lose it's fun. I think the DCI restricted and banned lists, although obviously helpful in tournament play, are killing friendly play. I was arguing with another player from the old group the other night, and I told him that I was going to start playing with Portal in my deck, the reasons of which I will get to in a moment. He said that I can't play with them, that they're illegal to play with. And so I asked him why. And he told me that cards are banned and restricted for a reason. Bingo. Everyone either plays Type I or Type II, whatever happened to just a game of Magic? Nobody's playing DCI Sanctioned tournaments here, why not just Magic?

I'm sure a lot of people out there can understand the kind of resistance you're going to receive upon saying that you'll be playing with Portal, or being seen playing with it, or even saying you like it...even OWNING it. I told a friend the other night that I planned to start playing with and collect sets of Portal. He was confused and started asking "why?" and when I explained, he just said "whatever." People around here have actually burned their Portal cards because a few of the seasoned players told them to. I pulled a Wrath of God out of the last pack of Portal I got, so I seriously doubt I'll be doing that. In all honesty, burning any card to me is a waste, as I'll take any cards I can get, just to have more. But the fact that players come under that much resistance from other players just because of the kinds of cards they want to play with is complete BS. Thankfully there are a couple of players that I play with now that don't mind it.

The restricted and banned lists take entirely too much precedence now. The old group went by the lists from Type I. I haven't tested this theory yet, but I have this wild hunch that if I try to play with a Divine Intervention in my deck, I'm gonna get a lot of flak for it. Let's keep in mind that the only reason Divine Intervention was banned from tournament play was because it caused too many draws. I think outside of that it's fair game. And no more unfair than a deck with four Cursed Scrolls or a complete set of jewelry. Sure the banned and restricted lists serve a purpose...but that's for outside of friendly play. That's for serious tournament play. I don't think Portal should be banned in friendly play either, but a lot of players make it that way. I remember seeing on the internet somewhere...

          "I'm not a Type I or a Type II player. I'm a Magic player."

Shame more people aren't taking that approach. Make the game a lot more fun, that's for certain.
