"To Suck or not to Suck" We all know about them. We've heard about them. Foresight. Cyclopean Mummy. Hurr Jackal. Abbey Matron. Most cantrips. CIRCLES OF PROTECTION. These are all cards that any experienced player wouldn't be caught dead using. They would crawl back out of the grave if they WERE dead if they saw a friend using them. If I was dead and my son was using a Circle of Protection, I'd get out of my grave, crawl to him, and say "soooooonnn...whyyyy are yoooouuu using a Ciiiiircle of Prooooteeeectioooon...?" then smack him repeatedly for being a bad boy and not respecting daddy's wishes. But let's reflect for a moment, shall we? Do these cards that suck really suck? What we consider crap may not really be crap. Granted, Prophecy isn't exactly helpful, but it can be a source of life, a key to knowing your opponent's deck, AND an extra card in your hand. I for one think Inspiration is utter and total crap. It bites. But it gives you two cards. Look at it this way: that can be up to 2 life with two Prophecies. Before you throw out some of the commons that people can't stand, take a second look at them. What I'm about to say will probably get me severely bushed. Foresight is not a totally bad card. Think about it, would you use Mana Severance (1U, Sorcery, Search your library for any number of land cards and remove them from the game) in your standard blue deck? Of course, if you're not playing against any kind of land-destruction. It cuts the politics (worthless crap) out of your deck. Foresight is the same thing, just only three cards, but with a card- drawing bonus. It's more of a tournament-level card in my humble opinion. If you're playing a tournament match, you're probably going to have all flavors of cheese in your deck. Chill (swiss), Acid Rain (cheddar), Lifetap (monterey jack)...and what's your opponent playing? Blue. Who in their right mind's going to counter a Foresight? Exactly. Pat yourself on the back. You just got rid of three political cards and snagged yourself something you can probably use. I'd like to conclude by saying that when you open that pack of cards, and you see something that's total garbage, stop and think. "Hey, I can use this. I just have to..." In my opinion, Necropotence is one of the worst cards (worse than Hurr Jackal) ever made for Magic, but it caught on and people make tournament-winning decks with it. Think twice about that crappy card you wanna trade. It might be worth more than you'd let on.
