Magic: MERRY CHRISTMAS

I hope everyone had a very good thanksgiving. It was a truly great day to be thankful. I ate like a pig, beat several friends at Magic, saw Alien Resurrection (a bit disappointing), but best of all THE DALLAS COWBOYS WERE CRUSHED (Quick Joke: How do you make a Dallas Cowboy stand up? Answer: Will the DEFENDANT please rise). But I digress, this is of course an article about Magic, so let's get on with it.

With Christmas just around the corner, this is going to be a light-hearted article. I feel at this time of the year, peace should reign. I'm going to lay off WOTC this month(well sorta), talk a little about Tempest, and give you my version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" as sung by WOTC. With that in mind, let's...get...busy.

Last month I wrote about what I received in my box of Tempest and how I felt about it. I received a ton of mail about it. The majority feel the same way as I do about what you receive in a box. People expect more bang for the buck. The biggest difference of opinion was about the "Same card, Different Name" portion of the article. A lot of people like the way WOTC has tweaked certain cards. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the cards that have changed. Respite and Endless Scream are two that come up and slap you in the face. But there are a few cards that should not have been tweaked. Take for example Skyshroud Elf. Why would you play this card (other then another green mana source) for White or Red mana, when you can use a Quirion Elf? It just doesn't make sense.

To be honest, if I was in charge of WOTC, I would change a lot of things. But the two biggest things I would do are this:
      A) Change the ratios of common, uncommon, and rares in each box to even it out a bit. I received a letter from a reader of Beyond Dominia named Mike Bigg. He made some great points. To sum his letter up he mentions that "WOTC is only hurting themselves by NOT making the ratios a little more even. Granted, it would hurt the secondary market a bit. But WOTC would make more money...", and cards would be a little cheaper at the secondary market. Think about it, it is very true. The secondary market would be hurt a little, in the fact that they would have a hard time charging, say, 10 bucks for a card that is more available. They might have to charge only 5, but they would still make out. They didn't pay the 5 bucks for the card. As for WOTC, they would make a lot more money (as if they don't have enough already) and the fans and players would be excited at the prospect of getting more for their buck.

The next thing I would do is:
      B) Reprints. I think I have figured out how to fix this. In the last month I have had a bunch of mail saying how certain cards HAVE to be in the stand-alone set. Now while I don't subscribe to this notion, let's for the sake of arguement say I do. If that's the case, Why not just make certain cards available for any Type 1, 1.5 and 2 tournament. For example, some of these cards could be: COP's, Disenchant, Incinerate, Fireball, Dark Ritual, Prodigal Sorcerer, Tranquility etc.

Now, I understand that there would be arguements on what cards should be in this area. But the easy fix for that would be to see over the last three years what cards were reprinted in stand-alone sets the most, NAME FOR NAME. Take the top ten of these cards and there are your "Tournament Always" cards. This means that these cards won't have to be reprinted and the player now gets more cards in a box. What's so hard about that?

Before I end, let me say this much about Tempest. They came out with some great cards. WOTC has made the player have to make a more aggressive deck to be competitive. I think the shadows force a player to rethink what to do if the opponent has shadows. Sure they stink on Defense, but they are really great on offense. Licids are also great. Played at the right time they can slow a player down. Slivers, well, I am not convinced about them yet. They are nice, but you need a bunch of them to really take advantage of their abilities. Also, the best way to defeat a sliver theme is to take out certain ones to slow the whole deck down.

Before I end this article, a quick Christmas song about WOTC, sung to the tune of "The 12 Days of Christmas".

12 Days of WotC
On the 12th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: 2 sets will be released a year

On the 11th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Players make the next set

On the 10th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: No more Reprints

On the 9th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Even out the Ratios

On the 8th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Fix the Banned / Restricted List

On the 7th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Listen to the Players

On the 6th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Straighten out the fast effect rules

On the 5th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Listen to DA SARGE

On the 4th day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Get on the Internet now

On the 3rd day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Faster updates for the PC (ed - game?)

On the 2nd day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Act on the Protest Letter

On the 1st day of Christmas the Wizards said to me: Read BEYOND DOMINIA

OK, so I'm not a song writer. Before I sign off for the year, I want to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the creators of Beyond Dominia, and to thank them for letting me write every month. Thanks. To all of you who take the time to read and then to write us. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and thanks a lot. Being in the military I have celebrated Christmas at different places around the world. We don't know how lucky we are. In fact there are alot of people in the States who don't have the luck you and I have. Please don't forget about them. While you're shopping and you see that person in front of your store ringing that bell, throw in some change. Even if it's a penny, help someone in need. Most important, be careful. Driving is crazy out there and some drive drunk. Be smart and come back in one piece. Have safe and happy holidays.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
