Stretching Dominia Dollars, Part XI

First, I made a minor booboo in last months column. I was supposed to include a line explaining the first of the thirteen was my favorite uncommon card. But since a total of one person wrote and mentioned it I suspect a column on common cards just wasn't as popular as I thought it would be. I planned to do a similar one for Visions this month. You know -- start with Nekrataal as the best uncommon and list River Boa and the other strong commons -- but since reader response was so light, I'll do something else.

What do you think of Tempest? Should I buy some? Those are the questions I hearing most often now. And here is the answer. Yes buy some boosters. It a large booster set with several new twists you will find very interesting.

My favorite new twist is what they have done with the uncommon and rare lands. There's modified duals, modified pains and several other lands with different abilities including turning into a 3/3 creature! My favorite of the lands is without question Reflecting Pool. Add 4 of them with 4 Undiscovered Paradises and the 5 color hand just may be back!

The next area of interest concerns the Medallions. Mana producers different from all the Diamonds I've been playing. There is still a debate going on in my mind between playing Diamonds or Medallions. But so far... 20 boosters packs, have blessed me with 0 Medallions. So the debate stays in my mind a little longer. Why did the Wizards go and make them rare anyway? SSHHEEEESH!

And another area that has me looking is the pre-constructed decks. My nephew had to buy one and asked me which one he should be buying. Since I still consider him a newbie, I suggested "Flames of Rath" and he was very pleased with the deck he got. But I must wait until I see what's in each constructed deck before I give a thumbs up or down to any of the other constructed decks. If I decide to buy one for myself I would most likely try "The Slivers"; because I have an affection for creature theme decks and slivers are an interesting new creature premiering in Tempest.

And there is the new "Buy Back" ability of new spells. Cast it and keep it in your hand at a specified cost. I think this is a much better new style of card then the "Shadow" ability being added to small creatures. I just don't see "Shadow" creatures as so tough since they can't block my normal creatures. What I do see as useful is enchantments that let me give Shadow to my normal bigger creatures when I don't want them to get blocked. Well I hope you like this higher level review of Tempest. Bottom line is BUY!.

      Thank you - Dave
