by Da Sarge Magic: The New Rules So there I was, reading the latest Duelist (Issue # 19) like any good Magic Player at the Holiday Inn in San Antonio (another Army Mission). The article was about the new set coming out called Tempest. I'll tell ya, there's alot of new things coming down the pipe. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll break it down for ya real quick:
BuyBack: Cast a spell, and if you have enough mana, you can bring it back in your hand, and cast it again if you want. Shadows: Creatures that can only be blocked by other shadow creatures. Slivers: Creatures that have a certain ability ( Flying, First Strike etc. ) that when there are more then one in play they all share the same abilities Licids: Creatures that can become enchantments, then turn back into creatures again.
And I thought that Phasing and Flanking were going to change things. Talk about Type II getting a little crazy. This will have players really scratching there heads for the coming year or so. I guess my question would be: Is this change happening to fast? Is this the shape of things to come? I really don't know. This is something that might have been nice if it was slowly put into the magic playground. Instead it is getting thrown to the players real quick. To be honest the two biggest things will be the BuyBack and the Licids. The other two are just creatures that will make the game much more aggressive. This is going to make a good argument for those senior players (Alpha to Fallen Empires) who have often said that the game has changed too much. Think about it, alot has changed since Fallen Empires. Not all of it good. I really think some of these changes are going to make it harder for the new player to catch on. I will be most curious to see how, if any, this will affect the fast effect rules. For example, will the Licids be a fast effect or considered a sorcery? I think that change (for the most part) is good. To stay competitive in the CCG market you have to adapt and change. In this case I am not so worried about what is going to happen when Tempest comes out. I am more worried about how the game will change in the future. For example, the game started to change when the cantrips and cumulative upkeep first came out. A minor thing really and something that no one really worried about. A year later, Phasing and Flanking were introduced. This affected the way we played and alot of new rule explanations had to be made. A year later we now have Tempest. What will happen next year? You have to understand, Weatherlight has given WOTC alot of ways to change the game. But we keep coming back to the same question, Is this bad? Is this the shape of things to come? I don't think changing the way we play is bad. WHOOOO, TIME OUT!!! DID I JUST DEFEND WOTC?????????????????????? In this case I think I am to a certain extent. I think the change has to come slowly so the players can both accept it and get used to it. With Tempest, WOTC is introducing alot very quickly. The creatures alone gives us three new ways to both attack and use enchantments. As for BuyBack, the jury is still out. BuyBack will be effective if the spells are worth the trouble and the BuyBack does not cost alot of mana. Also, when can you use the BuyBack effect? Does it have to be used right away, or at a later time in the game? To be honest, it would have been smart to put Slivers and Shadows in both Portals and the regular sets. It would have helped the new players with creatures that have special abilities, and it would have introduced a new element for the Real Game. As it is with all the changes that are coming, it just shows what a waste Portals really was. Boy, that really breaks my heart, hahahahahahahahahahaha. There is really only one bad side to this. If I am correct WOTC is going to reprint Disenchant, and some other stupid common card. Boy, that really makes sense. Hey, WOTC, how many times are you going to reprint that card? They are also going to bring back Time Walk with two new twists. It will cost 5 mana (2 blue, 3 colorless) instead of 2 mana. It will also be a sorcery instead of an instant. How much you want to bet there will only be one of these in each box and a ton of Disenchants? Oh well, leave it to WOTC to mess things up. In the end the players are the final judge. Are these cards really going to change the way we play, or is it a waste of time? Are there too many changes coming out too quick? Is this the shape of things to come? Is this good or bad? You're the judge, what do you think??????????????????????
Dem'd My Views and I'm.......
PS: The letter of protest has been sent to the people who signed up for it's review. If your interested give a shout to me. With that in mind, I could not send a copy of the letter to the following person: Brian Winterlin I do not have the correct e-mail address, please mail me again with the correct one. PSS: I could not answer one of my critics. It came back as unknown user. I don't know your name but your a student user who said that WOTC is doing a great job and the rule changes are to be expected from a new game. If this sounds familiar, please write me again, I would like to answer you. All commentaries are the opinions of the author, and do not necessarily reflect those of Beyond Dominia
