Beyond Dominia August 1997 -- Vol. 2, No. 8

compiled by Urza

Well hey there loyal readers, it's me, Urza. If you followed Beyond Dominia the last few months, you may be wondering why I have no Urza's Universe column this month? Well, that's because I've been very busy. I have had absolutely no time to write an article! I know, I know, some of you are disappointed in me. But, you've got to roll with the punches and wait until next month, when I'll have some article which I haven't thought about yet.

Anyway, I've had time to do the letters column (obviously). Let's open a random letter:

Dear Urza, I'm afraid you goofed in your answer to the "To tap or not to tap" question in the July issue of Beyond Dominia.....

Well, hmm... let's choose another one.

Dear Urza, I read your answer to "To tap or not to tap" and I found that...

Ok, I admit it! I messed up in a few things that issue. I'll be more careful next time! And just so you can rub my face in my mistakes, here are the long awaited....

CORRECTIONS

By the way, that's just an act. I'm not mad or anything about 30-40 people telling me how wrong I am, really!
:)

1) Whether a creature is tapped in no way relates to if it deals damage while attacking. Because of that, I am incorrect in my statement that if an Infantry Veteran attacks with a Serra's Blessing out (therefore not tapping), then tapping for its special ability, it STILL deals the damage. It's only while DEFENDING that a creature doesn't deal damage when it taps.

2) Also in that letter, the Prodigal Sorcerer will kill the other 1/1 creature on the spot with that tap. He never gets a chance to deal damage in regular combat. Of course, he still doesn't get to deal it to the player.

3) As for my Protection article, you actually CAN Healing Salve a creature with protection from white. The Salve targets the damage, not the creature itself.

4) Also for my Protection article, a Fungusaur with Protection from anything can not gain +1/+1 by blocking a creature of that color. It gets no damage, therefore doesn't get a bonus.

QUESTIONS

Finally, back to regular questions. No more wallowing in my mistakes, so let's pick up some letters I got from people who still trust me (thanks, readers, I was afraid I'd lose that from you).

Hi, Urza! I am e-mailing from Poland and I have three questions:
    1) If a creature has protection from white, can I use Circle of Protection to prevent the damage being done to me from this creature?
    2) If (for example) my opponent plays Incinerate on my Black Knight, can I play Giant Growth on the Knight to protect it?
    3) Do you earn money by making Beyond Dominia?

P.S. Sorry for the shortness of my letter, any mistakes in it and maybe stupid questions.

    Penczo

Hi! I never knew we had readers in Poland! Thanks for the letter! Anyway, to answer your questions....

1) That's a great question (and was actually asked to me by one of my close friends the other day). The answer is yes, absolutely! The Circle of Protection protects, specifically stated, the DAMAGE from a source. And, as I said in the corrections now, Protection from... abilities don't apply to the damage.

2) If the Giant Growth is played in response to the Incinerate, it will save the creature. The damage dealt to a 3/3 creature, for example, lasts until the damage cleanup phase. The Giant Growth will make the 3/3 a 6/6 even beyond that, until the very end of the turn.

3) Well, uh... you see... no. It's entirely voluntary (and takes a lot of dedication, if you decide to be an editor, contributor, and letters editor/answererer all in one!) :) But it's a lot of fun.
(Publisher's Note - More about the background, financial info, past, and future of Beyond Dominia will be discussed in this month's Untap, Upkeep, Draw. )

Next is a question that I absolutely LOVE. It's the classic question that confuses many players, about Protection abilities clashing. The writer gave no name, so I won't print it. The letter consisted of this one question....

Can a Black Knight block a White Knight?

Simply, no. The attacking White Knight has Protection from Black and can't be blocked by any black creatures. The only time the Protection from White would apply in this type of situation is if the other creature doesn't have Protection from Black. When it blocks, then all damage would be reduced to 0. Unfortunately, as I said, it can't block at all here.

This next one comes from Gordon Crutchfield.

This is a question that's been probably asked lots, but don't multilands count as both the 2 lands they represent. For instance a bayou (hope I spelled that right) which can add 1 black and 1 green to your mana pool. A swamp walker or a forest walker can go through that without worrying about other creatures couldn't it. And could it be taken out by acid rain?

Yes, that's right. Dual-lands count as both lands they act as. You're right about the walker examples, too. And finally, you're right about Acid Rain. But for now, that's the end of the rules questions. I have some other letters here, so let's start the section known as....

COMMENTS

I've got a letter here from Jeff. Here it is for the rest of you to read.

I have two replies to your mag.. first off the mag is really cool and i will be checking it out a lot ..
    1) In response to the Ernham Dijin way to rid yourself of the side effect.. get rid of your forests.. Quirion rangers.. or even just use diamonds to cast the ernham
    2) Also the deck featured in your deck section.. i loved it and have a deck like it except it is blue/ black instead of black/red.. any suggestions on this deck idea... it just isn't powerful enough
    Thanx,
    Jeff

Good ideas. There's not much I can say to comment about that, unlike the other letters. I assume you are referring to the black/red deck called "The Weatherlight Effect", given by Gandalf at http://www.bdominia.com/magic/issue11/genesis.html. As for help, why don't we let the readers suggest things. Send the ideas to me, and I'll make a section about them next month.

Well, that's all for the letters. I was really happy about this month. Even without the letters telling me my mistakes, I still received a lot of questions... MUCH more than last month. Also, I got a few comments about the magazine, and that's always great. Of course, this past month was the first one that the invitation to send questions appeared in two places, but hey, it's still good. And let me remind anyone that sends me letters that they become the sole property of Beyond Dominia. Since I'm nice, if you request that your name not appear in the letter, I won't include it. I never include email addresses, so there's no need to specially request that. Anyway, send the letters to r***e@m***i.com. I'll see you next month.

Urza
